Course Description and Purpose

This course provides students at the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management program with the opportunity to prepare for a job interview, explore career/educational goals, and seek employment within the industry with the proper tools to be able to market themselves appropriately.

Course Objectives

Upon completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Define post-graduation educational or career aspirations/goals/plan.
  2. Define personal brand.
  3. Develop skills to conduct research of companies, industries and specific jobs in support of opportunities for internships and post-graduate job search, (graduate programs and requirements – if the student wants to pursue graduate education).
  4. Leverage the services provided by the Career Services team

o    Develop/update a professional resume.

o    Update LinkedIn Profile, highlighting professional experience and skills.

  1. Be prepared to successfully launch his/her search efforts for the required internship.

Technical Requirements and Skills

One of the greatest barriers to taking an online course is a lack of basic computer literacy. By computer literacy, we mean being able to manage and organize computer files efficiently and learning to use your computer's operating system and software quickly and easily. Keep in mind that this is not a computer literacy course, but students enrolled in online courses are expected to have moderate proficiency using a computer. Textbook and Course Materials

Expectations of This Course

This is an online course, which means most (if not all) of the course work will be conducted online. Expectations for performance in an online course are the same as a traditional course. In fact, online courses require a degree of self-motivation, self-discipline, and technology skills which can make these courses more demanding for some students.

Students are expected to:

  • review the getting started page located in the course modules;
  • take the practice quiz to ensure that your computer is compatible with the learning management system, Canvas;
  • interact online with instructor and peers;
  • review and follow the course calendar and weekly outlines;
  • log in to the course at least once per week;
  • respond to discussions by the due date specified. See section on Late Assignment Submission Policy;
  • submit assignments by the corresponding deadline.

The instructor will:

  • log in to the course once per week.
  • respond to emails within 2 business days.
  • grade assignments within one week of the assignment deadline.

Communication in this course will take place via the Canvas Inbox. Check out the Canvas Conversations Tutorial or Canvas Guide to learn how to communicate with your instructor and peers using Announcements, Discussions, and the Inbox. I will respond to all correspondences within 24 hours.

Discussion Forums

Keep in mind that your discussion forum postings will likely be seen by other members of the course. Care should be taken when determining what to post.

Discussion Forum Expectations:

  • Provide clear guidance on the expectations and requirements
  • Available dates (unlimited or for an specific time)
  • Criteria for evaluating the originality and quality of students' comments and grade credit expected
    (Rubric is highly encouraged)
  • The expected turn-around time for feedback or grades.

Assessments

In order to mitigate any issues with your computer and online assessments, it is very important that you take the "Practice Quiz" from each computer you will be using to take your graded quizzes and exams. It is your responsibility to make sure your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements.

All assessments will auto-submit when (1) the timer runs out OR (2) the closing date/time is reached, whichever happens first. For example, if a quiz has a closing time of 5:00 pm but the student begins the exam at 4:55 pm, the student will only have 5 minutes to complete the quiz.

  • List all assessments (i.e. graded or practice)
  • Provide the dates and times when assessments will become available (i.e. From Monday 10:00 am – Tuesday 11:59 pm)
  • Provide assessment duration (i.e. 30 minutes, 1 hour)
  • Provide details for results
  • When will students be able to see the results (i.e. Immediately after exam, after the availability period has ended, or not at all)
  • What will they be able to see the results (i.e. Total score only, all of the questions and answers, etc.)
  • The expected turn-around time for feedback or grade.\

Assignments

Late Assignment Submission Policy

Each assignment is due on the Sunday stated in the assignment instructions. All late assignments must be submitted no later than 7 days after its due date. No assignments will be accepted 7 days after its due date.
