Course Description and Purpose

HMG 6246 – Organizational Behavior in Hospitality and Tourism is the study of human behavior in organizational settings, the interface between human behavior and the organization, and the organization itself.  Thus, organizational behavior reflects several levels of analysis and a wide variety of interactions among these levels.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course students will be able to perform each of the following activities with an accuracy of 73 percent or higher: 

•      Assess contemporary organizational behavior.

•      Justify how workplace behaviors can directly or indirectly influence organizational  effectiveness.

•      Assess the nature of motivation, and explain the relationship between motivation and employee performance.

•      Explain the key elements in an effective organizational reward system.

•      Explain the basic kinds of communication networks.

•      Explain the general stages of group development, and describe group decision making in organizations.

•      Assess the nature of leadership and its influence.

•      Explain the essential elements of organization design.

•      Discuss organization culture and how it affects employee behavior.

•      Explain organizational and individual sources of resistance to change.

Course Detail

Course Communication

External communication in this course will take place via Email.

The Email feature is an external communication tool that allows users to send emails to users enrolled within the course. Emails are sent to the students’ FIU email on record. The Email tool is located on the Course Menu, on the left side of the course webpage. 

Students are expected to check emails regularly for course-related messages or announcements.  Any email communication sent to the professor should be professional in nature, and include the student’s name, the course in which they are enrolled, a salutation and closing, and clear and concise message content.  More information on writing professional emails, including examples, can be found here:  Students should expect a reply response from the professor within 24 hours, unless a situation arises that prevents this opportunity.

Keep in mind that your discussion forum postings will likely be seen by other members of the course. Care should be taken when determining what to post.


Quiz Expectations:

  • There will be 12 quizzes during the semester; one quiz per chapter.
  • You will have 20 minutes to complete each quiz.
  • Quiz results will be available after the due date and you will be able to review the results.
  • Feedback for the quizzes will be available immediately after the due date.

 Assignment Expectations:

  • There will be 12 assignments during the semester.
  • All assignments are to be completed on an individual basis.
  • Use the Assignment submission option in Canvas.
  • Do not email the assignment to your professor.
  • All assignments are due in full before the end of class time on the day assigned.
  • The expected turn-around time for feedback and grades is 7 days from the due date.

       Group-Led Activity

Students will be assigned to a group; each group will develop an Organizational Behavior activity for one Chapter topic in the textbook.  Chapter topics will be assigned the first day of class. Students will lead the class in an activity designed to teach their classmates about their topic.  This activity should be clearly explained, then executed on the assigned topic date.  Activities should be designed so that they are transferable to the workplace, and should last no more than 45 minutes.

For example, if your group is assigned Chapter 2, your group will lead the class in an activity related to “Understanding and Valuing Differences.”

Activities will be assessed by both the professor and the class.  Activities will be assessed based on the following criteria:

  • The activity directly related to the chapter topic assigned.
  • The activity was clearly explained by the group in charge of the activity.
  • The activity was effectively led by the group in charge of the activity.
  • The activity was designed so that concepts presented are transferable to the workplace.
  • The activity lasted no more than 30 minutes.
  • The activity ended with a “wrap-up” or “debriefing” discussion that efficiently tied the activity to the concepts presented.
  • Overall satisfaction with the activity’s ability to achieve the desired goal.

Failure to contribute equally to the success of group assignments may result in receiving a zero for the assignments.  Should there be a conflict within the group students should exhaust EVERY effort to remedy the conflict within the group using professional, appropriate, prompt, and regular communication.  Students should notify the professor ONLY AFTER every effort has been made to resolve the conflict within the group so that mediation may take place.  Failure to notify the professor of a group conflict prior to the end of the semester will be taken as an indication that group members accept equal reward for unequal contribution.

Zoom Video Conference 

Zoom is a video conference tool that you can use to interact with your professor and fellow students by sharing screens, chatting, broadcasting live video/audio, and taking part in other interactive online activities. We will be utilizing this tool as needed.
