Course Description and Purpose

This course introduces current practices in Strategic Management in the hospitality/tourism industry. These practices involve thinking strategically and analyzing information through an exploration of hospitality/tourism operations with an emphasis on anticipating future business decisions in rapidly changing external and internal business environments.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to:

  • [CO1] Define the terminology in Strategic Management in the hospitality and tourism industry related to Strategic Functions.
  • [CO2] Recall processes in Strategic Management in the hospitality and tourism industry related to Strategic Functions.
  • [CO3] Identify the elements of Strategic Management in the hospitality and tourism industry related to Strategic Functions.
  • [CO4] Apply knowledge related to leading strategically and the evaluation of the external and internal environments.
  • [CO5] Discuss the application of strategic management skills in hospitality and tourism industry environments.
  • [CO6] Develop a multi-perspective business analysis for a public, for profit hospitality/tourism organization.
  • [CO7] Discuss issues of cultural appropriation in companies in international markets.

Teacher Methodology

All instructional materials and activities are delivered through Canvas in this fully online course. This course is not self-paced instruction and will require you log into the course several times a week.

Online courses require as much time and effort as face to face instruction.

Additionally, this is a writing intensive course. As such proper grammar and spelling is expected in all written materials. All written assignments have deadlines associated with them. As such late papers are not accepted without point deductions without written medical documentation submitted prior to the deadline. Technical Requirements and Skills

One of the greatest barriers to taking an online course is a lack of basic computer literacy. By computer literacy, we mean being able to manage and organize computer files efficiently and learning to use your computer's operating system and software quickly and easily. Keep in mind that this is not a computer literacy course, but students enrolled in online courses are expected to have moderate proficiency using a computer. Expectations of This Course

This is an online course, which means all of the course work will be conducted online. Expectations for performance in an online course are the same for a traditional course. In fact, online courses require a degree of self-motivation, self-discipline, and technology skills which can make these courses more demanding for some students. This course is not self-paced instruction meaning there are specific submission dates which can be found in the course schedule summary.

Students are expected to:

  • Review the how to get started information located in the course content and Module 0.
  • Introduce yourself to the class during the first week by posting a self-introduction in the appropriate discussion forum.
  • Take the practice quiz to ensure that your computer is compatible with Canvas.
  • Interact online with instructor through Canvas and not email. Feel free to message other students in the class, please do not Message “all” for any reason.
  • Review and follow the course calendar where you will find deadlines for all graded activities.
  • Sync these dates with your personal calendar by end of first week of classes.
  • Log in to the course five (5) times per week.
  • Respond to discussions within two days.
  • Respond to Canvas messages within two days.
  • Submit assignments by the corresponding deadline.

The instructor will:

  • Log in to the course ten (10) times per week.
  • Respond to discussions within two (2) days.
  • Respond to inbox messages within two (2) days.
  • Grade assignments within ten (10) days of the assignment deadline.

Course Detail

Course Communication

Communication in this course will take place via Canvas. Reaching out to me here will provide you with the most rapid response. 

The Inbox is a private and secure text-based communication system which occurs within a course among its Course members. Users must log on to Canvas to send, receive, or read messages. The Inbox tool is located on the Canvas Menu, on the left side of the course webpage. It is recommended that students check their Inbox routinely to ensure up-to-date communication.

Weekly Discussions

Be sure to adhere to the weekly discussions' due dates and post on time. There are no discussion participation requirements on any of the weekly discussions. Note that late posts will not be accepted for credit. Some weeks will have 2 weekly discussions.

Quizzes

In order to mitigate any issues with your computer and online assessments, it is very important that you take the "Practice Quiz" from each computer you will be using to take your graded quizzes and exams. It is your responsibility to make sure your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements.

Assessments in this course are not compatible with mobile devices and should not be taken through a mobile phone or a tablet. If you need further assistance please contact FIU Canvas Help Team.

Quizzes are chapter exams and are scheduled weekly.  Typically a quiz will be a mix of multiple choice and true/false taken from the chapter readings. Quizzes are available from Monday at 12:01 am until Sunday at 11:59 pm. They must be taken during the time provided as they do not reopen once they are closed.

Quiz Expectations:

  • Please see course schedule summary for the specific dates, times and chapters for each quiz.
  • Quizzes are open book and opn notes. Students are expected to follow FIU’s code of conduct.
  • The quiz duration will be 25 minutes.
  • The quiz results will be available within 5 days of taking the exam.
  • Quizzes cannot be taken past the due date.

Business Analysis Paper (Assignment)

Assignment Expectations:

  • Each student is be required to submit a Business Analysis Paper. This is an individual assignment. This paper will apply the concepts, principles and techniques learned in the strategic management course.
  • BAP must be submitted via both the drop box and Turnitin as a word document.
  • The expected turn-around time for BAP grades is ten (10) days.
  • Review the detailed Turnitin instructions on how to submit your assignments.
  • Weekly assignments and the BAP will not be accepted for grading past the due date.
